I have heard this is an issue with mask and I should use clip path instead... Will see if this is viable.

So it turns out clip-path ALSO does not work on safari mobile... FML No mask no clip path, I could redraw it all and just leave the bits out but that is just painful and full of needless bloat. So I might redesign things a little so it works on safari... it just does not look as good.
